I am a teacher-librarian in a rural Oklahoman middle school. I have the privilege of seeing all of 575 students that attend our rural Oklahoman middle school and I get to encourage not just their love of reading, but also their creativity and what is hopefully a life-long love of learning!
Our students may come from diverse homelives, cultures and ethnicities, but they come together in our building with the same purpose -- to learn.
As a faculty, we encourage our students to take care of business, do the right thing, and become learners for life. It is a pleasure to see them transform over the course of three years into young adults who are learning more and more about the world around them and about how they fit into that world.
My Project
Our middle school administrator is encouraging all 575 students to read a minimum of 20 minutes every day. Studies have shown that by simply adding 20 minutes of reading a day, students are more likely to shows gains in reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.
This assortment of Scholastic classroom magazines will be shared throughout the building, with at least two copies per magazine staying in the library.
Each of the magazine’s short articles and engaging photos and graphics are sure to engage even the most reluctant of readers. Teachers may choose to use these issues as lesson materials in small group lessons or for independent reading material. Either way, these ‘zines will be great for our young teens!
