This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our PreK to 5th-grade school is located in the Bronx, NY.
Our school is a comprised of the following student population*:
- 90% of student's receiving a free lunch
- 97% of our population has either an African-American and Hispanic background
- 27% of students have Special Needs
- 7% English Language Learners
- Ranked 2,216th out of 2,386 NYS Elementary Schools or the bottom .05%
We share our building with a charter school and while we have a healthy relationship, our students often make negative comments about the co-location. They feel they are treated differently and as second-class citizens.
By having this technology in the Library, I also hope to lift their self-esteem and self-worth.
My Project
I know it's hard to believe, but yes, there is not 1 printer in our school for students or teachers to use
Students will be able to publish their digital stories and share with their friends.
It's important for our students to have real-world experiences and access to technology so they're able to compete in a 21st Century world. We will be using www.StoryBird.com to create our stories and will be self-checking each other. By printing our our work, Students can share their work with each other and conduct spell-check, grammar fixes and fully-experience the writing process.
I'm the librarian and work in the "learning hub," of the school, hence if there is anywhere a printer should be, it's in the library.
