My Project
A Zen-like calming space provides students with a structured, intentional environment to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation—especially valuable in a high school setting where academic and social pressures can be intense.
Students will use this space to take short, restorative breaks when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or need a moment to refocus.
The space will promote self-regulation and mindfulness by offering calming sensory tools, soft lighting, and quiet seating. Rather than being a reward or punishment, this space supports emotional wellness and builds students’ capacity for self-awareness and stress management. Regular, responsible use of the space can improve overall classroom behavior, reduce conflicts, and support a more focused, productive learning environment.
The space will be created using a rug to define the area, curtains to create a sense of privacy and separation from the classroom, and a soft lamp to provide calming, non-harsh lighting. A small bookshelf with mindfulness or calming-themed books will encourage quiet reflection and emotional regulation through reading. A cardboard cut out will serve as a visual focal point that reinforces the space’s purpose. By engaging with the calming environment, students can reset their emotions, refocus their attention, and return to class activities more grounded and ready to learn.
