Every day, our incredible students face challenges that go beyond the classroom walls. These unexpected challenges make it difficult for our students to show up and give 100% to their work. Sometimes these challenges even inhibit our students from attending school at all. They just need a space that will allow them time and space to relax and refocus on learning. We are creating that space in our school in the form of a wellness room.
By addressing students' emotional and mental health needs, we will help improve focus, concentration, and overall academic performance.
We want our Zen Den to look a little different than what you might see in a typical classroom. We are creating an atmosphere that will give students that space to fully relax and calm down before returning to class. Our tent, adjustable height table, beanbag chairs, and other flexible seating options will allow students the space to meditate and reflect on their day to help make it successful.
Our Zen Den will be a dedicated space for students to de-escalate and practice self-regulation skills, leading to better behavior and emotional control. The sensory items and fidgets will help students who are experiencing anxiety and stress and will help them refocus to be their best selves in the classroom. I have seen so much improvement in our students who can practice self-regulation skills, and I want to extend that to our entire student body.
