This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school I work in is a specialized district complex that serves students with special education needs coupled with high behaviors. Most of our students have autism, although we do have students that have other disabilities. Our student population is small due to the nature of our work. We are constantly working on building and developing important life skills for our students.

Our students have the ability to show their true skills and abilities with the proper supports and encouragement in place.

Our main approach with our students is to teach important life skills, while still exposing them to appropriate level academics. To do this, we rely on some technology but mainly manipulatives and books that our students can easily work with using their fine motor skills. This also requires us to get very creative and spend a lot of time prepping materials for our students.

Each of our students has amazing possibilities in front of them. My goal is to provide each student every opportunity I can so that they can live a fulfilling life as independently as possible.

My Project

My students require a lot of motivation to complete challenging and difficult tasks some times. Providing them with food options allows me to motivate them to work on a small task, accomplish weekly goals, and to utilize their life skills that we are working on. The food in this project is not only going to be used as a reward, it will also allow my students to participate with real food objects in a life skills lab that we do in class.

My students love hands on activities and they love having food rewards to work for.
