This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students face struggles and challenges in their daily lives, but I see their dedication and the joy they find in learning is truly inspiring.
We work together to create a learning community where everyone is safe and feels valued.
During their time in my class, I work to show my students the rewards hard work brings, as well as to show them that our unique differences are to be celebrated and respected.
I teach in a Title I school with all of my students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. While our families want their children to be successful and there is great community support for the schools, I know that many students will not come to school prepared with the necessary supplies. I do my best to ensure that all students have what they need academically, physically, and emotionally during the time they are in my care.
My Project
My students come to school each morning eager and energized. Unfortunately as the day wears on hunger pains arrive and it becomes difficult for them to continue learning the entire day.
Empty stomachs lead to attention issues like headaches and hunger gets in the way of academic focus.
While all students in my class are provided with free breakfast and lunch, this is often not enough to keep their growing bodies full throughout the whole school day. Even adults have a difficult time being productive when they are dealing with hunger; it is especially challenging for a 6 or 7 year old to overcome this discomfort.
By providing my students with snack options such as Nature's Valley granola bars, Snyder's pretzels, and applesauce pouches their stomachs will be full all day with healthy food that gives them the energy they need.
