This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One minute I hear "We are the best of friends!" and the next minute I hear, "I don't want to be your friend, EVER!" To help my students remember that friends make the world go 'round I have introduced beginning letter writing with our "Message Center" routine.
I am blessed to teach 18 first grade gifted students in a neighborhood school in an urban part of Florida.
My school is a Title I school, which means that over 70% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. My students have a wide variety of learning needs and challenges. My students are eager to learn.
My Project
"You've Got Mail!" will foster beginning letter writing skills and help build friendships. Our message center routine begins by students choosing a name stick to determine who they will be writing to, then place that pulled stick into the "I've Been Picked" cup so they are not chosen again. Students can use the "Friendly Greetings"Â sentence starters to help get their letter going. This will avoid the usual "I like you," "You are fun". When finished, they fold it, stick it in an envelope, address it, stamp it (we use fun, self-inking stamps) and deliver it to our classroom mailbox! I deliver the mail to their mailbox. Then the fun begins! The kids love reading their letters to themselves and to each other. I ask them to each personally thank the person who took the time to write their letter. Then, they take their letters home and we begin the whole process again!
As I stated earlier, this project, "You've Got Mail!" will foster beginning writing skills and help build long lasting friendships!
Your donations will make a difference in the lives of my students. You will give them a chance to experience writing in a fun and creative way. Like the song says, that's what friends are for!
