A welcoming and loving classroom community is something every child should feel a part of. In my classroom, we create this community by sharing and loving books together, engaging in rich conversations, and finding plenty of time for kids to play and socialize with each other.
I am lucky enough to go to work every day and be a part of an incredible school community.
My students are from a number of different urban neighborhoods with varied ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. School is where they come every day to work together, learn together, and become a part of a community. Through our inquiry-based curriculum, students at my school not only learn academic content, but learn explicit strategies for collaboration that will hopefully serve them well throughout life.
My Project
This new set of mailboxes is wider and lower than what we have right now, which will allow all of my students to be independent with their mail. Additionally, the influx of toys that this project will provide will allow my students to work in smaller groups during playtime, which will allow for more collaboration and sharing of ideas between students.
My students will be huddled together in pairs of two or three as they work intently on a puzzle, build a giant structure with building tiles, or dig for alphabet rocks in kinetic sand.
This important small group time is what allows students to develop many social skills that will hopefully carry them throughout life.
