My students need funding to design and market their own products.
"Gifted students represent a vital resource that has unlimited potential. We need to make sure that these exceptional young people have the support and services they need to be successful"(Chuck Grassley). For this reason, I am inspired and motivated. I teach a group of 7th grade Gifted & Talented students at a middle school in Colorado. They are a creative, inquisitive, innovative crew that love to learn! Because of their zest for learning, finding engaging, challenging curriculum and experiences is crucial! We spend a lot of class time exploring topics of intrigue, discussing real-world challenges, and problem-solving.
The best quality of this group of students is that they elect to participate in unique learning experiences.
It helps that they are surrounded by like-minded peers, people that understand the difficulties faced by the gifted population. In our class they feel like they belong, that they aren't different than their peers; they are a part of a community that understands and embraces them. It's truly a special group, and I anticipate the incredible impact that they have on our society.
This program will provide students with the opportunity to strengthen their creativity and critical thinking skills while engaged in 21 Century learning experiences! This in-class experience has two parts (25 sessions). First, students will engage in the process of learning about themselves while developing a business idea, designing a prototype, and finally presenting their product to a panel of judges. Then, they will work on expanding their entrepreneurial skills as they experience the actual production, marketing, and financial calculations for finished goods. This will culminate in a real-world marketplace where students sell their products and earn profit!
"[The YouthBIZ Startup Program] helped me understand about budgeting and finance, and it also helped me learn more about myself." Our students are growing up in a society that demands real-world knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
By learning about themselves and the business and economics of a global economy, they are preparing for a multitude of possible career paths and new and exciting life journeys!
