Youth Service Team PSA Production Studio

My Students

Transforming children is par for the course in Title I, K to 5 school where I teach physical education.

We have one of the largest enrollments of English as a New Language Learners of any elementary school in our city. The challenges these kids face are amazing. Many are learning to speak English for the first time, even as they continue to develop and master their native tongues at home.

There are over a dozen languages and dialects represented in our school. This, along with the long hours of school and after-school program enrollments, severely limit the time available for social interactions and the formation of meaningful friendships outside of school.

In every grade, there are students with special needs. All of the children are working hard to meet our rigorous curriculum. What is more amazing than all of this, however, is the dedication these students show day in and day out as they strive to reach all of their personal, social, and academic goals.

My Project

At our school, we value so many wonderful things; creativity, intelligence, strength, perseverance, and friendship. One of our most admirable school-wide goals is giving back to our community.

In the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” This past Spring, I had the pleasure of establishing a Youth Service Team, comprised of some super kind and creative 3rd graders.

We attended a Youth Service Summit with some other kids from around our great city and learned about ways we can give back to one's community. The students learned so much and were so eager to follow through with the ideas of service, that they chose to remain together as a TEAM and came up with some pretty great ideas for improving their school and neighborhood communities.

In order to support their visions and help them create video PSAs, educational posters, and multimedia presentations, I want to create a digital production studio. With a tablet device mount, tripod, and a photo backdrop and lighting stand kit, we will be able to produce some informative multimedia presentations and help our school work towards health and wellness. The kids also want to use this equipment to begin a Help the Homeless Campaign in the Spring.
