My students need 8 digital scales and 12 new stopwatches to measure the masses of various objects throughout the year and time their mousetrap race cars.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Mass is something we all have in common! You have it. I have it. Everything we see has mass, yet we can't figure out how much mass we have without any scales! We need to know the mass of various objects to calculate the forces acting on them, their momentum, and many other useful quantities.
My students are mostly ethnic minorities (Hispanic, African American, and Native American) in a low-income school in Arizona.
Our school has extremely high expectations for our students. Every one of my students is either in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, or in preparation for it. They are extremely motivated and curious, as well as dedicated and exceptionally kind.
My Project
With the new class set of eight scales, we will be able to learn about measurement uncertainties while also learning about the concept of mass and how it differs from weight. Mass is used in many calculations and using this technology to determine mass on their own will benefit students in their future careers. The set of timers will help replace the old, broken, often unreliable stopwatches we currently possess that make really good paperweights. The stopwatches will be used throughout the year in many investigations and projects including measuring the acceleration of their mousetrap cars and objects in free fall, and timing oscillations of a pendulum among many others.
I have over 120 students this year and these supplies will be used by every one of them many times throughout the year.
From physics to chemistry; biology to earth and space science; time and mass are essential measurements for students to understand how to make.
