it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school serves almost 500 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
We are a school that specializes in business, promotes college and career readiness, offers year-round experiences that include many work related trips, workshops, business based competitions, work-based and service learning opportunities, mentoring, career counseling and internships for all our hard working students including those economically disadvantaged.
Although my students are hard-working, we have limited resources and they are often distracted by their cell phones which becomes a major obstacle to succeeding in the offline world especially when we are trying to develop collaboration, leadership, and social skills for business communication.
My Project
For my students, having mailbox cell phone charging stations will greatly enhance our business model classroom. Each year personal cell phone use increases as the major distraction in learning.
However, my students are from low income families and will not keep their phones in their book bags and unattended spaces because they fear their devices will be stolen.
They keep their phones in their hands and lack the self control to turn them off. I need to help them develop more business collaboration and social skills to lead and present information professionally. Taking their phones away breaks down teacher-student relationships because they view no cell phone policies as punishment. They also stress over their phone not being in a secure location causing more conflict and distraction in the classroom.
The model chosen was decided by my students, themselves and put on their class wishlist. It would be such a thrill to start the new school year off with the resources needed to create a cell free-stress free learning environment.
