Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The YIPs-Youngins In Progress, formerly the Minnie Howard Soccer Club was started by Ana Bonilla, a Social Worker at ACHS/Minnie, to target Latino men who were failing English, Math, or multiple classes; a group often underserved by ACPS or other city programs. (These are not young people who are a part of the International Academy as they were born in the US or came to the US early in their lives).
The program began with students at Minnie Howard but has expanded as the young men have been promoted to the 10th and 11th grades at the King Street Campus.
In addition to weekly soccer games/practices during the school day (ASA is involved), the boys have tutoring after school (Dept of Defense employees, as well as teachers with a stipend, are serving as volunteers), workshops once a week during the advisory period (focused on healthy lifestyles and life after high school), and multiple parent workshops throughout the year. Students must participate in each component of the program and parent involvement is mandatory.
The program is currently supporting approximately 41-10th graders and 52-9th graders. Enrollment for 11th graders is 17 students, it has dropped off significantly. While the program is strong at Minnie Howard, they need more funding, support, and volunteers to continue to support the young men as they move to the next grade. The data collected to date shows that as soon as the support stops, attendance and grade drop and behavior problems increase.
