As a former Reading Recovery teacher I hold to the belief that reading and writing go hand and hand. Better readers become better writers and better writers become better readers. We have formed "Communities" in our building based on our hallways. We meet monthly to share ideas and to help each other to achieve. We are a team that promotes the reading and writing duo. I begin our Writers Workshop on the very first day of school by reading poems, nursery rhymes and stories to the children. We talk about the illustrations and author's name. We find words in the text that we know and write them into our word journal (I have already purchased these.) Next, the children will do their own writing, using a writing sheet that has space for their illustration and lines for their writing. The children then share their writing with the class. We have a special chair called the "Author's Chair". The children will place their writing in a 2 pocket folder that has fasteners in the center to hold their papers. I also type the Mother Goose rhymes and poems in large type for the children. We place these in folders as well. We move into creating class Big Books. I'll read a book like "Mary Wore a Red Dress" and then the children will each write a page for our class book. I have their pages laminated and bound for the children to read over and over again. The children thrive on these kinds of activities! I will need the following supplies:(60) 2-pocket folders with fasteners, (20)Crayola markers (bold and thin line), (60)boxes of 16 Crayola crayons, (400)Primary pencils with erasers, 4 packages of fingerpaint paper. (Fingerpaint paper works best for creating Big Books because the markers do not bleed through.) I am basing these numbers on a classroom size of 25-28 students and our school's high mobility rate. When new students come in I like to have enough supplies for them. I appreciate your generosity and look forward to having the children create a special thank you. Our school believes in authentic writing experiences for the children. Thank You. Kathleen Trybula O.W.Holmes School 955 W. Garfield Boulvard Chicago, Illinois 60621
