The students are from a rural area and come to class eager to learn biology. Since we are in a small district of three schools, funding is often limited.
My students enjoy being engaged in hands-on activities that allow them to go beyond the traditional cookbook labs where they conduct inquiry labs that allow them to experience real life scenarios.
My focus is to encourage students to go to college, to love biology, and to become more than they dreamed they could achieve.
My Project
Inquiry is a big part of our curriculum in biology. Our AP students are required to do a minimum of 13 inquiry labs to prepare for the College Board exam as well as experiences in continuing education. The hot plate with stirrer and volumetric flask will help students properly mix nutrient agar broth for bacterial transformation labs and other similar experiments. We are also asking for disposable gloves to eliminate contamination or exposure to bacterial cultures. The ring stands and clamps will help students set up and hold the apparatus for the transpiration and respiration labs, allowing students to collect data more accurately. The bottle brushes will be very beneficial in keeping our beakers and graduated cylinders clean, which will help eliminate sources of error in their investigations.
Our students are eager to prepare their solutions and run experiments using the proper equipment which will allow them set up their inquiry labs and collect accurate data like real scientists.
We are dedicated to training our students to think and explore like true scientists in the 21st Century. Having these lab supplies will give students a better insight into how scientists actually work in a lab, giving them the hands-on experiences that will help bring scientific inquiry and investigation to life.
