I feel so fortunate to work at the Creative Arts Charter School in San Francisco. I guess that's why I've worked here for almost 11 years now. We use the arts to teach everything, and have full-time Dance, Art, and Music for the children. We have 195 students, K-8. More than 40% of our children qualify for free lunch. The First Grade Readers in my class are doing so well that they have torn (literally!) through more than 1,500 books between them! These are the kind of books that really help children learn to read--"readers" if you will. After a year of concentrated Reading Recovery training, I well understand their worth. The books are now a bit tattered, and the "high end" amongst them almost exhausted. In other words, we desperately need NEW books, new readers, and there is no money left in this year's budget. First Grade is THE time for beginning readers, so it's very important that we have PLENTY of books. Each child reads a new book every day, and then takes it home to read to their parents. We need more, to refresh and replenish. Can you help us? Thanks in advance, The First Grade Monkeys (our nickname)
