We have 1750 students enrolled in our school. I teach 4 level 1 visual arts classes, 1 sculpture class, and 1 digital photo 1 and advanced digital 2 class each year.
I have 480 students each year and I have an extra 45 students yearlong who are members and officers in my art club and National Art Honor Society.
My students are highly energetic and love art, they create art for class assignments, contests, just for fun, for other class subjects and for fundraisers and gifts.
My Project
My class is full 100% of every day with 480 young artists working annually, even during lunch and after school. Our class numbers have increased, but we are still in an art room built in the 80's and fitting 30 students in 15 desks with a few computers and books and storage cabinets for art supplies and cubbies for student supplies and books, and the visual resources takes up nearly the entire room and unfortunately we do not have a drying rack for my students artwork.
We need a drying rack because, currently I have to use the bulletin boards and counter tops and a clothes line with clothes pins to dry 90 color wheels we are working on.
In addition I have 45 extra students between my art club and National Art Honors Society. After school I am working additional hour each day rotating out dry and wet works to keep students work free from smudging.
With the limited space, I have sometimes opted for smaller less messy assignments. Knowing how much my students love painting and printmaking and mixed media works, this makes me sad, but we simply do not have enough space.
Having a drying rack will open up space for us to create more works in variety of mediums, expanding our curriculum and taking away the unnecessary stress students feel worrying about someone smudging their works.
More than half of students from low‑income households
