Young New Orleans Artists in the Making!

My students need 30+ art materials to integrate art throughout the curriculum! We need paints, clay, molds, paper, brushes, plaster, and more!

My Students

We live in a city known for art, music, and theater! Help me bring out the artist in all of my students by integrating art into subjects like social studies and literature!

I teach 26 fifth grade students at a charter school in a community that was greatly affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The majority of our students live in poverty, and many of our families struggle to provide even basic school supplies for their children. I teach a diverse group of students that are African American, Vietnamese, and Hispanic. Many of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners who are highly motivated by the opportunity to actively engage in their lessons through art and movement.

My Project

This year, I'm lucky to be able to participate in a year long professional development opportunity to learn how to integrate art throughout the curriculum. As the year progresses, I will be learning more and more methods to integrate art into all subjects. From theater, to poetry, to painting, I will be actively incorporating art into many of my lessons. My students are such visual learners, and they deserve the opportunity to learn their true artistic abilities and gain confidence in their own creative minds. Our city's culture is known to revolve around the arts and I know that all of my students will gain greatly by being given the opportunity to do art on a regular basis while learning our regular subjects. The 40 minutes my students get every other day for art is just not enough time. I want my class to learn to paint, sculpt, act, write poetry, and create other wonderful works of art while learning their regular lessons.

Imagine learning about landforms by creating mountains, rivers, and plateaus out of clay, or painting the setting for your latest narrative writing piece.
