This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember getting your first musical instrument in school? Or perhaps you can recall the joy of first learning how to play an instrument or read music. Many students today never get that experience due to cutbacks in Music Education.
Our students are mostly black and Hispanic from the surrounding neighborhood in NYC.
We also include Eastern Europeans new to the city. They are from working families and will not get the chance for formal music education except at our school- a small public school where we have started a new music program only four years ago. They are a fun and creative group of kids who absolutely love music!
My Project
With a donation of these recorders, we can start further studies of reading music, teaching how to care for a musical instrument, learning how to play in a group, and what it means to be a "team" player.
The students develop a strong sense of ownership of the instrument, because it is theirs; no one else will play that instrument.
