Each morning, my students gather in the classroom and assemble their instruments. They begin to tune their instruments by listening to the concert master's note. Once they are done tuning, they go through warm-ups and finally rehearse our pieces.
Aside from the obvious signs of the class not having the traditional chair-and-desk look, the students in my class are unlike any other.
They are enthusiastic, even on the gloomiest days, and are always filled with positive energy. They come from a low-income community with a school district that does little to financially support extra-curricular activities. However, our music department is a true exception. Our combined choir and instrumental programs have produced phenomenally talented young adults and leaders who strive to inspire countless audience members. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish them as plain high school students at first glance. Yet, little do you know how much they are empowered through the arts.
By changing our strings, our students have a better chance to achieve a great performance. We usually change our strings once a year, this year the weather has been quite unpredictable and so some of our students have had to change their strings more than once.
First, my students will see that I appreciate all that they do for our school and our community.
By being able to gift them with items to make their work easier and more special they will continue to work hard. A little appreciation goes a long way to students and my students give so much.
