Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My wonderful students are a group of four-year-old little sponges who absorb anything that is thrown their way. For some, the only educational experiences these young minds receive is when they are at school. I want to be able to give my students an engaging learning environment by providing them with the opportunity to be in a classroom setting that allows them to explore through hands-on activities.

My classroom is full of bright students who are ready to learn.

Due to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, a lot of students were displaced and considered homeless, but they are still eager to come to school to learn and thrive. I have 20 students in my class which also includes ESL (English as a Second Language) students. We are located in the Third Ward area of Houston, Texas that is near downtown Houston. My students come to me with many challenges at an early age. Most of the students are in single family homes, shelters or raised by grandparents. The majority of my students struggle with language and abandonment issues. I strive every day to give them a safe place to come and learn where they can be happy and healthy.

My Project

The Smartboard helps bring so many fun and engaging lessons to life. It is, however, dependent upon a laptop in good working order. A new laptop and learning interactive software would allow for dependable computing abilities and connections to short educational video clips. This will help reinforce daily math, science and literacy concepts and so much more! The possibilities are endless! Due to my students small hands they need a mouse that they can work with the other computers and laptop. The future is technology and I want my students to have the upper hand and not be left behind. All of these materials can help my students to see that what they are learning has value beyond our four walls, beyond our small community and out into a global world that they are learning to belong to.

When you help us get technology in our classroom, I will be able to provide additional interventions to students who are behind and /or struggling academically to be better prepared for the next grade level.

Technology is part of the key to a whole new world for my tremendously talented young learners. I envision that each of my students will receive an additional fifteen minutes of intervention daily so there will be less of an academic gap between peers. The Smartboard, laptop and single button mouse's are amazing tools to help students learn about so many different things and will also allow peer interaction. Without your help to get this technology to support the Smartboard, my students are missing out on a lot of hands-on, interactive ways of learning, which is how students learn best. Please help my young learners get the technology that they need to be better prepared for the future. We would greatly appreciate you!
