I teach in a Middle School in Lynwood, California. My students are in the 8th grade. I love my job as an 8th grade U.S. History teacher. As a history teacher, my goal is to expose my students to the experience and events that have shaped our country. The courageous men and women that we learn about really excite the students and encourage their curiosity for learning. Knowing how our government is organized and the importance of the constitution helps my students to feel empowered about their rights and role as a citizen in our society.
A rich and relevant classroom library with multiple types of reading resources will help my students develop their knowledge of American History.
Many of my students are avid readers and would like the opportunity to develop skills inside and outside my classroom by checking out novels, picture books, children´s books biographies, and autobiographies that feature historic content.
As a history teacher, one of the most amazing ways that I help my students learn about the past is through the use of primary and secondary sources. When students touch and feel items and look at historic pictures, history comes alive for them.
By exploring primary and secondary sources beyond the textbook, my students engage with historical information on a deeper and more personal level.
When students explore picture books and novels they view history from a different lens and perspective. By providing a library rich in various cultural and historical sources, my students are developing their literacy skills as well as historical context and knowledge.
