My students need access to publications like Scholastic Scope and Junior Scholastic, which will keep them informed about the 2016 election and other current events. They also need notebooks and folders to stay organized.
I teach in a Title I public middle school in Brooklyn. My students come from many different countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, China, the United States, Yemen, Chile, Pakistan, and Ecuador. Together, we study Social Studies and learn about the values, customs and beliefs that have shaped America's history. As you can imagine, the different experiences that my own students have had truly enrich the learning inside our classroom.
My students love listening to stories about Revolutionary War spies and the reactions of the native Taino people when they first encountered Christopher Columbus.
This storytelling pulls them in and gets them interested and invested to do the hard work that I ask of them. My students are expected to read critically, analyze multiple historical perspectives, and reflect all that they have learned in their writing. It is challenging work, but every year my students continue to impress me by asking thoughtful questions and placing themselves in the shoes of those who have come before them.
My Project
This year I will be teaching Social Studies and Current Events to close to 360 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. We will read articles focusing on the election and other current events using Junior Scholastic and Scholastic Scope. We will debate, discuss and learn from each other. Since most of my students’ families have difficulty making ends meet, your donations will help them have a notebook for my class every day. My Social Studies students will also have 4 different folders for every marking period, making it easier for them to keep their homework and projects organized.
They may not want to admit this, but middle school students crave organization and structure.
Kids are built to succeed, but they need a certain level of stability in their lives in order to do so. It is a real challenge getting hundreds of seventh graders organized, motivated and excited about learning, especially when many have special learning needs, did not learn English as their first language, or consistently deal with the difficulties that come with living in extreme poverty. But last year, with the help of so many donors, my students thrived in my classroom. My students were organized and prepared to work hard every day. Their homework grades were strong and participation was at an all time high! This year, your donations will help my kids make even bigger strides. Folders, notebooks and awesome magazines will keep them organized, engaged and focused.
