I am a Band Director at Smith Language Immersion School.
Over the past year I have had students in Band and Musicianship class ask if they could write their own music. Of course I said yes but how was I going to help them get started.
After thinking about it for months, I decided that we could have a class project that would involve all of the students in 7 different classes.
The Young Composers Project:
We would like to write a musical composition arranged for a full concert band on the middle school level.
One person writing a piece of music is difficult enough but having over 100 students involved will be a challenge to say the least.
My plan is to create an original piece of music that ties into the unique cultural diversity of our school. I teach at a Language Immersion school where students learn their core subjects in 5 different languages, French, Japanese, German, Spanish, and English. The piece of music will have 5 distinct sections based on each cultures heritage and folk history. The conclusion of the piece will have all five parts co-existing in harmony with one another. The moral of this idea can easily be seen.
The students will have assignments to find folk songs and melodies that they beleive will teach us of their heritage. In class we will narrow them down into workable numbers and begin to map out our musical plan.
The best way to compile all this infomation and begin to create the composition is through the use of a software program called Finale 2005. With this program, the students will be able to write their own music on the computer. The students hear what they have written as the computer plays it for them. They will learn the nessisary music theory needed to write a musical composition. This tool will be of great value for many years to come.
