Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students will experience the thrill of exploring space and become a member of the Young Astronauts Club. The Young Astronaut Council was established by the White House in 1984 in an effort to promote greater proficiency and interest in science, math and technology using space as the underlying theme. I teach special education resource and gifted classes to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Our Young Astronauts will meet on a regular basis and participate in activities that will teach physical and chemical science and math using model rocket construction and flight.

Although we currently do not have the resources, my students, their parents and my colleagues share the common goal of wanting to enrich the students' understanding of the universe in which we live and want them to participate in cooperative learning experiences that excite and stimulate their minds and imaginations through experimentation, building and launching of rockets.

In order for the above activities to be extremely successful we need 60 rockets, launching materials and rocket engines. Students will attend grade-level meetings taught by parents, experts in related fields and me to awaken their curious minds and build positive, constructive and cooperative relationships with their peers, parents/family and school staff. Parental/family involvement is encouraged with projects in which all are drawn together to participate in rocket building and rocket launching days.

Young Astronauts has been extremely important and successful which is evident by the large number of participants, their return and continued interest every year. You will make it possible for my students to create life-long memories resulting from being a part of this Young Astronauts program.
