Mrs. Phipps from New Haven CT is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the tools they need to complete art projects and small-group activities, including markers, crayons, and glue sticks.

W.G.C.S. is just that, a community school. Many students come from low-income families so I strive to do everything I can to make their educational experience memorable. My kindergarteners are some of the most wonderful, beautiful, inquisitive souls I have ever met in my 51 years. "My littles" have had a successful first 4 months of school. For some, it is their first experience in a public school setting. I see many of my littles who need help with fine motor skills. Being this my first year as a Kindergarten teacher but also in my 20th year of teaching, I realize there are so many small items needed to develop fine motor skills. Imagine being able to make a choice of what you want to use to work in small groups or complete a project! I believe that different types of art supplies will help students in many ways.
Kindergarten is the place to use your imagination and be creative. We often do projects based on read-aloud books or just about any type of assignment to get our minds thinking and growing. Having the right tools and sturdy tools, such as the requested crayons, markers, and glue sticks, will help my "littles" improve their fine motor skills while expanding their imagination and enthusiasm for education. For example, after reading "The Color Monster" during an SEL lesson about understanding feelings, students were asked to pick a monster to make based on the way they were currently feeling. While some students chose sadness, many chose happy and even better, calm. Having appropriate coloring tools would have helped them complete their project more efficiently.
