I am a 4th grade classroom teacher and I also teach art once per week to all 105 4th graders at our school. My art students are creative, enthusiastic and love to experiment! They are excited to come to art each week and are always hoping to try something new.
My students find joy in the creative process.
With a wide variety of learners and abilities, art is something that reaches all of my students. They are experiencing art as regular part of the curriculum, not an extra.
We don't get to paint very often because our supply of paintbrushes is so old that many of them are damaged or falling apart. Some of them are fifteen years old or more! Should I try and do any painting, I find myself scrounging for enough paintbrushes that may hold together through the lesson.
Kids need to be able to explore with mixing color; painting is a fundamental part of any art program.
Additionally, we would be able to experiment with other types of drawing and illustration than we can just by using a pencil. Charcoal, paper and the blending stubs will allow the kids to learn more about how to blend and shade creating the illusion of depth, and making their drawings more realistic.
