Help me give my students a chance to broaden their horizons towards reading. These classic novels are backed by stories that have stood for decades, embedded themselves into pop culture and adapt perfectly to The Heroes Journey!
I have the privilege of working with some of the best students that Kern County has to offer. These students are among some of the best and brightest in the Kern High School District. It is my benefit to watch these students grow throughout their high school career and to reach new aspirations of learning to appreciate literature and creative writing. Their dreams and choices they make are greatly influenced by what they learn in and out of the classroom. Thankfully for myself and them, I am there to help them along the way.
I teach both Sophomore English to College Prep students as well as Seniors.
My Sophomore students have the great ability to be introduced to some fantastic literature and learn to evaluate these stories to reflect on how it effects them personally.
My Seniors are experiencing something entirely different. These students get to take a look at novels possibly have read before or are experiencing for the first time through great study and research into Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey"; the Monomyth. This course for my Seniors is the Young Adult Novel class, debuting characters and relatable experiences right around their age.
My Project
Providing these classroom sets will allow my students access to these wonderful novels from established authors in the fantasy field, each a pop-culture phenomena in their own time. Each of these novels would do wonders for students of any respective high school age and even those in college. The Heroes Journey is a crucial focus for my Young Adult Literature course, which can be easily identified and analyzed in these stories. Stories that have pop culture connection allow for great integrated interest. Having a range of novels for students to choose from also doesn’t restrict their interest level when it comes to reading.
