Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember curling up under your covers on a chilly night with a book you just couldn't put down? Well, the books my students and I selected for this project are all ones which they would like added to our classroom library which they researched and would love to read.

My eighth graders are primarily students who attend a predominantly Latino school with a population of 98.9 low-income families, located in a Chicago neighborhood in the middle of two rival gangs who are in a power struggle for territory.

My students travel to school surrounded by graffiti, drunks, and dreary-looking and depressing environments but they persevere and look forward to being in school.....our attendance rate is 97.5

My Project

With iPads, iPods, Facebook, video games, and texting, I have struggled the first two weeks of school to get my students to pick up a book on their own and read over the weekends. Well, with much patience and perseverance.....I have succeeded in 'hooking' my students to read independently. Unfortunately, I have more students and not enough books in my classroom library for them to check out and the chilly Chicago nights have now approached and many of them are requesting to take out extra books to read for the dark and cold weekends. Assist me in converting the few non-readers I still have to be avid readers for a lifetime by sponsoring our project.

A good book can take one to far away countries and adventures without ever leaving your home!
