My Students

Young people in the urban core do not have equal access to the performing arts. There is a dearth of after school activity cultivating young performers because of an institutional lack of resources. What little resources schools posses do not engage students and can not inspire full participation.

My students are natural performers.

Middle school kids love to be on stage. Theater students who are drawn to the stage, view performance as an outlet that lets them be the center of attention while providing a space where they feel comfortable being themselves. Our kids do not have as many chances as suburban kids to experience the magic of theater. Out of a student population of over 500, 75 percent of students at our school receive free or reduced lunch. Their experiences with personal poverty have led them to expect a lack of community resources at school. When they come to participate in our program, they find a few available scripts to perform, and an overall lack of quality resources. Sadly this is what they expected and are willing to settle for what they can get. I would like your help to exceed these low expectations and provide richly for my students.

My Project

Some of the best middle school theater is taken from Children's Literature. Roald Dahl is a fantastic story teller and this collection of plays based on his stories is sure to engage and excite all middle school students. Each of these plays has been chosen because of its accessibility to middle school readers and its familiarity. Many have read these books and would quickly adapt their characters. Young actors need challenging roles and these plays provide just that. Also they are very funny and Comedy is something Middle School students love. I hope to stage at least one of these plays in class and as full-length productions for parents and the community.

This is a very important project because it equips students with the tools for performance.

Having access to these plays will allow my class to be taught the basic skills of the theater in a fun and memorable way. Nothing is more important than giving students the opportunity to be creative.
