You Want Me to Go From Kindergarten to 3rd grade? Seriously?
My students need engaging Common Core Materials. They need science, close reading and language skills centers. They need social studies games, and a developing writing chart.
This year after teaching kindergarten for ten years I was moved to 3rd grade. My principal gave me a reading and math text book and wished me luck. My students need third grade materials in language arts, reading, math, science, social studies and reading that are engaging and hands-on. I need hope.
My students struggle in so many ways.
I have one that has has been in the country for four weeks. She is doing fantastic, but needs constant language support. I also have three struggling readers that are five guided reading levels below where they should be. I also have a child that refuses to do anything unless it "moves her." Add to that three that go to speech, one that has Aspergers, two with dyslexia and a set of four girls that I can't get to do anything but chat with each other. Our school is constantly growing and we are running out of room. We have recently had two new subdivisions of "subsidized" housing go up in our school boundaries. This has dramatically changed the socioeconomic status of our school. Our parents usually both work and my students walk home to an empty house most days after school. On the other end I have a child that is reading five levels above where he should be and behind him is another three that are four levels above. Quite the mix!
My Project
My favorite quote is: “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I UNDERSTAND.” A typical day starts with a math worksheet. A hands on learning activity from Meet the Common Core Math Standards Learning Center would eliminate a worksheet. During guided reading, students silent read if not working with the teacher. Genres of Literature Readers’ Theater Scripts, Grab and Play Social Studies Games, Developing Writing Skills Teaching Charts, and Language Skills Learning Centers for Common Core Standards will give every student access to learning during small group time. Next, Shared reading, strictly from the textbook now, Close Reading Comprehension Teaching Center and Literature and Informational Text Charts would give students strategies, skills and graphic organizers not in the textbook. An Elementary Science Instant Learning Center would have students analyzing, organizing and interpreting data not filling in blanks. This grant would allow Students to be actively learning.
This donation will help my students learn!
Right now they are just going through the motions with the textbook. Answering the questions where they need to, but not seeking out learning. These materials will literally wake up my classroom. I see the students engaging in the activities, centers and lessons and barely able to contain themselves because it finally makes sense. I see low readers flourishing, because they finally have a chance to learn their way! High readers soaring higher!
