You Sunk My Battleship!

Help me give my students Battleship board games. They will serve a dual purpose: to teach students how to plot longitude and latitude, as well as make a connection to graphing on the coordinate plane.

My Students

My students are a diverse group, with a wide range of academic ability. All of them, at one time or another, need some additional instruction- either individually, or in a small group.

Many of my students are visual learners, who can benefit from small group instruction, where I can provide hands-on, kinesthetic activities that reinforce a concept in a format that is more interactive than a paper and pencil activity.

They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common - they love to learn, to explore, and together, we are helping them develop a growth mindset.

My Project

Through the years, I have observed that my students consistently struggle with the concept of plotting longitude and latitude. I have used a variety of activities to reinforce this concept, but none of them seemed to "stick". Finally, I had an epiphany: the game Battleship is based on the use of the coordinate grid- so why not give that a try? I borrowed a game from a co-worker, and voila! The kids got it.

By using these Battleship games, my students will be able to practice identifying and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid system.

But this wasn't the only time I was able to use these games. So many of my students have difficulty making a connection between the graphing we use in math, and the same graphing we use in science. So, when we play Battleship, they again can use the coordinate grid system to create x,y coordinate pairs to attempt to sink each other battleships. Who knew that Battleship was such an educational game?
