My Students

I teach visual arts to more than 600 students, ranging from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Many of the students in my Title I school only have the opportunity to explore and create during their time at school. They need to develop an appreciation for art and understand that utilizing art projects will provide a way to practice skills and showcase their learning in novel ways.

I currently teach in a low income neighborhood with 75% of our students needing assistance; our scholars do not have many opportunities to explore art mediums such as paint, chalk, clay, and others when trying to showcase their learning.

Some of the challenges they face are a lack of supplies so the time in my classroom is critical for them to reach their fullest potential. My classroom includes regular education students and students who need intervention services, as well as students with cognitive and behavioral challenges, but provides the opportunity for all children to excel as they explore learning through the arts.

Supporting my students will inspire them to reach far beyond what they see in their everyday lives and communities to believe, appreciate and love art.

My Project

Students love to draw. As the art teacher, I see that many of the art supplies needed for various projects are not common materials for many of my students. The art supplies requested are tools that will help my students to sketch out their drawings and then use the markers and oil pastels to add color and flair. Often times, students who struggle with academic tasks have the opportunity to shine through the creation of art projects.

Students will use Crayola markers, colored pencils, oil pastels, and number two pencils to showcase their learning by designing pictures of what they have learned.

These art supplies will assist my students in demonstrating their learning in new and colorful ways.
