Readers are leaders! That is why we use the Daily Five Literacy Program in my first grade classroom. The Five components of Daily Five are: Working with Words, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, Read to Self, and Read to Someone. We need another way to listen to reading.
My students are first graders in a public school in a large city.
They are excited about learning, and they are becoming excellent readers! Currently, there are 28 children in my class, and that makes it hard for all of my students to have an excellent listening experience during the Listen to Reading block of Daily Five.
We have one listening center with headphones that need to be replaced. There is no funding available for headphones, and so the listening experience is often not a good experience. I am sure that adding an iPod listening station to the listening center block will ensure that more of my students will be able to listen to reading, and that the listening experience will be excellent without battery and/or headphone failure.
My Project
Having an iPod listening station will enable my students to listen to reading without equipment failure. More of my students will be able to listen to stories on CD while reading along with the book. This will increase the reading skill level of my young readers. The iPod listening station will model good reading and help students to increase their fluency and accuracy. Most importantly, the listening station is fun!
My students LOVE this block of Daily Five, but the only listening center we have now is not an exemplar listening tool. The wireless headphones do not work consistently and this causes the Listen to Reading experience to be a frustrating experience for my students and for me as they need my help during small group instruction. This also disrupts the learning of the students engaged in small group instruction. An iPod and dock will help the flow of Daily Five in my classroom by allowing my students to engage in the reading activity that they enjoy the most!
This project will touch each child in my classroom as well as future members of my class.
An iPod and dock will enable my students to engage in a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. We already know that we love to listen to reading because we do it every day, these technology tools will make sure that when we listen to reading we can hear the wonderful stories on CD that already make up our classroom listening library.
