My Project
Children are social creatures who have a basic human need to be around other children. Playing sports together, singing together, dancing together and playing games together brings with it a sense of value that cannot be compared to being in the company of oneself. The benefits of togetherness in the shared reading experience holds a lot of value as well.
Whole-group literacy is a time for purposeful reading instruction, peer collaboration and discussion, and thinking and talking about books.
It is a time for the teacher to guide the students as they learn about vocabulary, character development, and themes. This vital portion of the literacy block is also a time for powerful student engagement—which makes all the difference in literacy learning.
The two books I am requesting, Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry and The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo, have always sparked collaborative discussions which often involve students sharing personal experiences with their peers. The students uncover empathy when they discover their peers have similar personal experiences, which include loss of a loved one, feeling helpless and lonely, and not-fitting in.
I will continue to read these two beloved books to my students every year, but my hope is, with your help, to get a book in every student's hand so we can read it together. After all, we can all benefit from togetherness.
