I team teach STEM in an urban, public school. I share students with their language arts and social studies instructor daily. This provides a strong sense of community where both teachers know all the children and families. We communicate with parents several times a week for drop-off and pick-up and we use online platforms when needed. Many of the children have been in classes together since age three, which is evidenced by strong established relationships.
Our students are always excited to learn.
They’re enthusiastic about sharing their current knowledge and forever formulating questions that assist them in learning more. I applaud their curious dispositions. One major concern is that they take a District mandated assessment online for math, reading and science every advisory. They are fearless when it comes to technology, unfortunately, they do not have access to "child-friendly" learning devices and many lack the proficiency required to navigate computers effectively. By using an iPad, students can learn typing, multi-touch navigation, problem-solving (with puzzles and games) and they can practice on the platforms where they take their assessments. Please help them prepare to use this tool and embrace the changing demands of the 21st century.
Using touchscreen devices are the most appropriate children, as their fine motor skills are still developing. When touchscreen devices are used in the correct way, they can actually encourage children to work together and improve their social skills by taking turns and sharing ideas as they complete online activities side by side and view educational content. One of the main uses for technology in the classroom is teaching and reinforcing core academic skills. Learning activities designed for a computer can help children learn how to reasoning, find patterns, critically think, increase their number sense, compare and contrast and to identify complex patterns, etc. Activities can be adapted to fit the individual needs of the student much easier than traditional printed worksheets and packets.
