Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the past 30 years I have been privileged to teach Dance and Theater at a lower socioeconomic school in NYC. Many of our students are new to our country, some are also new to the English language. This year, for the first time, we also have 4 Pre-K classes in our building.

Due to the fact that some of our students might be overwhelmed, I feel that my dance classes provide an oasis where they can relax and enjoy themselves. Dance can be a wonderful, non-verbal way of communicating that I think is very necessary for the very youngest and the older children. The music that I use can touch them and bring them out of their shyness and help them to feel free and open.

I would very much like for my children to see themselves as they move about. My room is not a true dance studio, but rather an empty classroom. I do not have mirrors. I plan on taking pictures of all my classes, printing them and posting them on my bulletin board. I believe that this will be a great motivator and fun for all to see. After the initial shock of seeing ones' self, it also will be a great teaching tool . We will be able to "stop motion" to see "a moment in time" and correct any mistake that a student might make while dancing. At the end of the year, we will be able to make a culminating book for each child to keep as a remembrance of his/her year in dance. As the years pass, each child will be able to follow his/her own progress and see how much he/she has changed and grown.

During these tough times, I look to generous donors to help with a project such as this. Rather than the usual way we as educators have to motivate students, this project uses a totally different approach. I believe that it will positively touch the lives of some students who might otherwise get lost in our big system. I would like to thank you in advance if you choose to help fund this project. The pictures that I will be taking should show a school filled with students dancing with a joy and abandon that would not be possible without your generous gifts.
