This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love my job and I love my students. Not a day goes by that I am not smiling, laughing, and having a blast. Don't get me wrong, there are many sad and stressful parts of my job as a Title I third and fourth grade teacher. Many of my students have hard lives with many barriers, but nothing gets in their way or mine in making them lifelong learners.
Our "classroom" is virtual this year and my 3rd and 4th graders need motivation and rewards for all of their hard work.
My students start their school day online at 8:00 and end at 2:15. Most of my students' parents are at work during the day. I want to motivate and reward them for coming to class on time, staying online, complete the assignments, and reading daily.
Through love and understanding, a culture of acceptance, and a positive growth mindset, my students are on their way.
My Project
To get better at anything in life, you need to practice the skill. As a teacher I can teach my students all about how to decode a word by syllables. Or how to find the main idea and the details of a text. That is an essential part of a child's education. But, without the time spent practicing these reading skill, students will not benefit from all of the instruction.
Students need to read for 30 minutes a day to become readers and learn to love books.
What I need, is a way to motivate the students to put in the time with books to become readers.
With distance learning I have the technology to give my students e-books and the technology to see how many books, pages, and words they have read. I can see how much time they have read. I can even give them a quiz on those books to check for understanding. Now I need to provide the push for then to do it.
