I teach first grade at a public charter school in Washington, DC. My students are entirely low income and all receive free lunches. They are the most amazing people I have ever met.

Recently, I gave them Christmas gifts. They each got a brand new book to take home. They were flabbergasted that it was new, and it was only theirs. You see, all of the books we have are decades old, were donated used, or purchased at Goodwill by yours truly. They hadn't really seen new books before.

I would like to have a set of brand new books for classroom use. I have requested what might seem like quite a lot of books. In elementary school, it is very important that children find a book that's "just right." Too easy, and they are bored. Too hard, and they are frustrated and give up. Getting books leveled from easiest (aa) up to L (about a second-third grade level) will allow all of my children to find a book that is just right. Having more than one copy of certain books will allow me to conduct group guided reading which has been proven as an effective way to teach reading.

Your help will make it possible for my students to find a book that is just right. And it won't just be any book. These are books no one has used before us. Even though they are only six years old, my children understand that they have less than many people, and brand new books are a way to make them feel as special as they are, and even more importantly to get excited about reading.
