Teacher Professional Development: I need to attend Greg Tang's Math Plus workshop in order to better develop math curriculum for upper elementary. <profdevpilot>
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my classroom my students interact with math through real life tasks, purposeful practice, and conceptual games. At the end of this year I want my students to be able to solve story problems, have a strong number sense, and be able to fluently add and subtract.
This is my fifth year teaching in elementary school.
For three years I planned and taught math and science in Spanish at a dual language elementary school. This year I teach all subjects in self-contained classroom, however, I exclusively plan math for all of the second grade classrooms. I have a passion for teaching math and want to develop quality engaging curriculum and lessons that allow my students to access math on their level and learn to love it as well. I do not want any students to leave second grade with negative feelings towards math or their math abilities.
My Project
I attended a workshop by Greg Tang two years ago and it was one of the best professional developments I have received on math curriculum. The way that he presents numbers and how to use numbers is intuitive and helps students grasp those concepts more easily. This year I planned the math curriculum for second grade from scratch and next year I will be planning the math curriculum for third grade from scratch. I am positive that attending Greg Tang's Math Plus conference will provide me with tremendous insight into strong practices that will help me develop a highly effective new curriculum.
If I am able to attend the Math Plus conference I will be a more skilled math planner and teacher.
I will be able to set up my students, and all third grade students in my building for not only mathematical success, but mathematical bliss. I will have new insights in order to plan a curriculum that allows all students to love mathematics.
