My students live throughout an urban environment in Missouri. Around 80% of them are Hispanic English language learners. Our school is dual language which means the kids learn in both English and Spanish. Many of their parents are illiterate and most of the students are still developing basic reading skills in third grade. If they do not catch up to grade level now, it is likely they never will and for the rest of their lives be behind in reading. They realize that they are behind academically and the challenges they face in order to reach their goals. My students are hard working and eager to learn.
