This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are active learners who love music in various aspects. They are a curious bunch, always asking questions about the world around them and how music fits into that world. As my first year of teaching progresses, they inspire me every day with their inquisitive nature to give them an authentic musical experience: ukulele.

From the first day of class with my kiddos, there was an interest in playing ukulele.

Currently, I use my own personal ukulele for our Welcome Song, instrumental transitions and occasional chord and theory teaching. When passing it among the students, they are eager to try to form the chords and improvise as well. With a ukulele in each of their hands, the teaching possibilities are endless!

Musical composition, building fine motor skills, musical skill building on accessible instruments, a quick-start to playing songs, a new form of assessment, easy cleaning solutions for use across multiple grades---- these are the things that I envision in my classroom with these supplies. Most importantly, the joy of making music together in an environment where everyone can feel engaged and successful.
