My students are lovers of nature, community, and service-learning. My students are members of our after-school garden club. These students range in age from Kindergarten through 8th grade and have a love for growing beautiful and edible plants just outside our school. Our garden remains open and available all summer for families to harvest food as they need or want.
This is a great opportunity for families who may struggle to put fresh food on the table.
My students love the garden so much, they even come back during the summer to give it the TLC it needs. Our garden students have great ideas for taking the garden club to the next level, all with the goal of helping more families access fresh-grown vegetables.
My Project
All of these garden materials are meant to help my young gardeners be more efficient in the garden. Right now, our greenhouse is inefficient and our weeds are out of control.
Enhancing the efficiency of the greenhouse and eliminating the weed problem will allow us to spend much more time on our goal; producing as many veggies as possible for our local community!
Additionally, creating a better composting system will allow us to use our resources to create our own garden fertilizer, rather than using our limited garden funds on fertilizer and compost from a store. Composting bins will teach our young gardeners to use the waste around us to make (free!) compost for the garden. The greenhouse supplies will have our seedlings singing, "You make me wanna sprout!". Last but not least, the weed barrier supplies will definitely have our students cheering about all the "thyme" they will have for doing the fun stuff!
