I teach at a small, rural K-2 school in Southwest Michigan. We are a Title I school, with many of our students receiving free lunch. We have a caring community that tries to do its best for our students.
Our school works hard to meet the needs of all our students, educationally and socially.
I have a class full of inquisitive students who are eager to learn. I strive to create a safe, welcoming classroom where my students can grow and explore. However, like most teachers, I want to do more.
My Project
One of the first things I do before walking down the hall to pick up my students is turn off the harsh overhead light and turn on our floor and desk lamps and put on some quiet music. I try to make our classroom a calm and inviting place where students feel welcomed. The students absolutely love entering our "home away from home"! But the floor lamp was a hand-me-down that has lost some of its shades, the desk lamp stopped working in May, and they were just not quite bright enough!
I want to provide my students with additional lighting sources to help continue that calm and cozy feeling in our classroom, in order to make a more conducive learning environment.
The floor lamps and rope lighting will be utilized by students as an alternative to the harsh overhead lights.
These items will be a welcome addition to our classroom, whether used in the mornings to set the right start for our day, during our read aloud time when they are all gathered around the rocking chair, or when winding down after a long day of learning.
