You Light Up My Life

My Project

As a Special Education developmental preschool teacher, I emphasize and promote the importance of sensory materials for my students. Activities that allow students to explore using their senses supports social-emotional regulation skills and pro-social peer interactions, language development, turn taking skills, sharing common space and materials, and exploring their world through manipulation of materials. Using play based learning, my team and I provide a variety of sensory materials every day. These include, but are not limited to; paint, kinetic sand, beach sand, playdough, flax seed, ice, fabrics, scented markers. In order to make learning fun, we regularly change out materials to add novel items. Students of all ages, but especially young learners, love new activities that elevate engagement in the classroom. They enjoy things that light up, make noise, can be manipulated in multiple ways, and can be enjoyed with others as a social activity.

With the goal of providing a cognitively rich classroom, I believe a light table would be a fantastic addition to my classroom sensory activities, supporting the development of the calm, well-regulated, communicative adults of the future.
