My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? The purpose of this project is to bring books to our classroom that can capture the imaginations of my students.

There are 29 second graders in my classroom.

We are located in an urban area in the state of Illinois. All of the students are energetic and eager to learn. My classroom includes students with special needs, as well as English language learners. The students also represent a wide variety of learning styles.

My Project

The books I am requesting are requests directly from my students. In the beginning of this school year, a student interest survey was sent home. One of the questions asked about students favorite books. These series were requested. While looking through the books that are available to request, I took into account the favorite books of the students and added a few additional books that I feel would be suitable to the students in my classroom based upon the curriculum that we use and the resources that are already available. Each day students have 20 minutes of DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. These books will give students a wider variety to choose from and encourage them to read daily. If this project receives funding, my students will have the opportunity to read some of their favorites, including; Ramona, Judy Moody, Captain Underpants, Harry Potter and resource books detailing the Biomes, which will be helpful to us as we are currently learning about the biomes of planet Earth.

This is important because with all of the technology that surrounds us, books are almost forgotten.

Libraries aren't frequented as often as they once were and not many people read for pure entertainment. It is important for these students to understand what its like to be wrapped up in a book that they just can not put down!
