My students need a variety of books to create literature circles. Students will be able to choose the books they want to read. The books will take them beyond the walls of our classroom.
Do you remember getting hooked on books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the prized next installment in your favorite series. My students share that excitement and joy of waiting for and then finally devouring the newest books in their favorite series. My students are inquisitive, obsessive readers who are craving to discover the newest adventures in their favorite book series. My students work hard and love to learn new things. They are creative, thoughtful and full of enthusiasm. They also admire hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. They love to read and write their own stories. My students love to discuss and read about the issues going on in the world. They love to come up with different ways to solve issues kids their age face today. I can say they are truly my inspiration!
My Project
Having a variety of books to choose from will make a big difference in my students' learning. When students get the opportunity to choose what they read, they are more engaged in the piece and more likely to make a personal connection to it. Providing this opportunity for choice gets students more engaged in the reading and helps develop fluency skills. Higher interest in the material leads to higher efforts. Students will try to define unfamiliar words using context clues, ask more questions at confusing sections, and relate the material to their own lives. This will all help students develop fluency and enjoyment in reading. The second benefit of using literature circles is to provide more exposure to literature. I would like to provide a variety of reading genres and topics to ensure each type of student can have options of some interest to him or her. The more exposed they are to various reading material, the better they will become at comprehension. Other students will understand new literature better or in a different way, which will help the group as a whole understand challenging material. Lastly, exposure to various readings will also help students become familiar with the various elements of literature (setting, character development, theme) since different types of books are reliant on different story elements. Overall, exposing students to various reading materials greatly promotes development in reading comprehension.
