My Students

Who was your favorite DC comic character? Marvel? What if your favorite comic character could be Oliver Twist? For my students graphic novels can do just that. Graphic novels entice the senses, and help students want to read more often as well as more complex texts.

My students are diverse in many ways, but the one thing they have in common is an eagerness to learn and explore.

We are a high-poverty urban school district in Indiana, and many of my students find school as their one place of consistency. They are 24 minds of wonderful ambitions. They have dreams of going to colleges including UCLA, Indiana University, Yale, Harvard, and many others. They have every ability to achieve these ambitions, but my classroom must have the tools they need to achieve fifth grade objectives first.

My Project

We need three sets of 6-8 historical graphic novels on Paul Revere, Gettysburg, the Roaring Twenties and the Civil Rights Movement. Having access to high interest books in my classroom will inspire reading at a higher level of difficulty. Students who are interested in the books they have will always rise to the occasion to read them. Whether adults like it or not, students do judge books by their covers.

A building teammate has his class sing a song that goes like this: You gotta' read baby read!

If you want a job that really pays, the road to college will lead the way! And we want it, yes we want it! You gotta read, baby, read! I want the best future for my students, and that means more READING!
