Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hardworking, inquisitive and creative. They are multilingual and love to learn in both languages, Spanish and English. The majority of them come from Spanish speaking homes or Mam speaking homes (an indigenous language of Guatemala) and are English Language Learners.
They live in a working-class community, and our school is a Title I school which means that the majority of students (in our case 100%) receive free lunch because of family income.
Every day they inspire me with their willingness to learn new things and take on new challenges. They have a lot of dreams and aspirations of becoming writers, scientists, teachers, doctors, artists, and historians.
My Project
These book bags will allow students to choose the books they want to enjoy reading and help create a sense of ownership for their learning. Students will also be able to take their book bags home and practice at home with their family to encourage family literacy!
My students love to read and they are specifically motivated to read and grow in their literacy skills when they see books they enjoy.
These books will allow our classroom library to be filled with books that are written by people of color, books that have characters that look like them and that tell their stories so that students can feel seen. The books I selected are also books that they have shown interest in, like non-fiction books about animals and different places. Moreover, students deserve to read books at school that are fun and have their favorite characters.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
