My students are curious and enjoy pushing themselves, engaging with other cultures, seeing growth in their language skills, and making connections across disciplines. Because my course is an elective, I have the privilege of teaching students who choose to study French and who always come into my classroom eager to learn. Most of my students plan to use the language for work or for travel one day, in addition to using it to get into college. A few of my students have been to several different countries, while others have never been as far as Chicago. My students enjoy expanding their horizons and studying cultures from across the entirely of the French-speaking world.
My students are motivated when they see that they can engage successfully with a wide array of comprehensible and authentic resources in my classroom.
My students have clear proficiency goals for the end of each year, and they take pride in improving their fluency. I work hard to connect our curriculum to my students' lives to motivate students and get the most out of our limited time together. We are a tight-knit bunch, and I love when I get to have the same students for multiple years!
My Project
At each level of our French curriculum, my students spend time free reading in French multiple times per week. By engaging with easy French readers, classic children's books, and books unfamiliar to them from across the French-speaking world, students increase their vocabulary, fluency, grammar, and cultural awareness just by reading. In fact, research shows that picking up word meanings by reading is 10 times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction! And we all know it's more pleasurable!
Just like in an elementary school classroom with burgeoning first-language readers, I need to fill my French library with books at a range of difficulties and on a wide variety of topics to suit my students.
These books will help to expand the selection of authentic texts available to all levels of French students at my school. Students are often recommending books from the library to each other, and they request specific books that they'd like me to order. My students enjoy comparing the differences between English and French versions of a beloved book from their childhood, and they also love the feeling of accomplishment they get from finishing their first chapter book in French independently.
Over time, my students and I both see phrases from their reading work their way into my students' written and spoken French, and often I notice my students using vocabulary I never explicitly taught them. As high school students who routinely have assigned reading, students love having a choice of what to read along with the time in class to simply read for pleasure. I love that immersing themselves in the language through reading is one of the best things they can do for their language skills, and that they are building a love of reading that will continue long after graduation.
